Gender Equality – Action Day
The 6th of October is the #Morethanfootball Action Day for Gender Equality.
Despite the progress that has been made in the last years, we have to admit that gender discrimination is still one of the most concerning problems of our society. There are still big inequalities in access to paid employment in some regions, and significant gaps between men and women in the labour market. Sexual violence and exploitation, the unequal division of unpaid care and domestic work (women do 2.6 times more unpaid care and domestic work than men), and discrimination in public decision making, all remain huge barriers.
Ending all discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right, it’s crucial for a sustainable future; it’s proven that empowering women and promoting gender equality is crucial to accelerating sustainable development and it also has a multiplier effect across all other development areas.
At EFDN, we believe sport is a powerful tool to promote and raise awareness for gender equality, helping tearing down the barriers of discrimination against women and girls. Making sport more inclusive for women can also empower them and help them develop skills needed to become equal participants and leaders in their communities.
